Founder, Co-President
Matthew is a junior at the University of Michigan studying Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology and Business. With research interests in chromatin biology and drug discovery, he is curious and dedicated to exploring how to utilize the potential of business to advance biomedical innovation. He is currently researching chromatin biology in the context of cancer at Michigan Medicine's Rogel Cancer Center.
Founder, Co-President
Jon is a junior at the University of Michigan studying Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology and Business. Fascinated with all things biology, tech and entrepreneurship, Jon has experience founding a venture-backed tech startup, conducting molecular biology research, and helping students spin out their research into new biotech companies through Nucleate.
Founder
Mukundh is a junior at the University of Michigan studying Computer Science with research interests in single-cell technologies, protein engineering, and generally the intersection of computation and biology. He’s interned at multiple biotech startups including a sister company of Moderna (Cellarity) and two Andreessen Horowitz-backed startups (Asimov and Octant) and is currently doing single-cell RNA sequencing research at the Broad Institute in Boston. He also founded the Ann Arbor chapter of Nucleate to enable students to spin out biotech companies from their research.
Director of Business Operations
Ethan is a sophmore at the University of Michigan studying Industrial and Operations Engineering. He is passionate about linking the engineering and business worlds, and how their combination can lead to positive community outcomes. He hopes to take his knowledge of data management and apply it to optimize systems related to healthcare.
Director of Engagement
Sakib is a senior at the University of Michigan studying Biomolecular Science.
Director of Laboratory Operations
Tim is a junior at the University of Michigan studying Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. He is currently in the Li Lab within the Department of Internal Medicine at Michigan Medicine. His research interests focus on hematopoietic stem cells, blood development, and factors involved in leukemogenesis. Tim hopes to pursue medicine and research in the future, and is passionate about expanding research opportunities for all.
Director of Finance
Gabriel is a freshman at the University of Michigan, studying Biomedical Engineering. He actively contributes to Medlaunch, creating innovative medical solutions working with those in need of them. He conducts research at the Motor and Visual Development Lab, dedicated to enhancing the mobility of neurodivergent individuals. He's previously interned at Plenum Biotechnology, where he gained valuable insights into bioengineering hydroxyapatite synthetic bone grafts.
Project Directors
Bubble
Rafee Mirza is a junior studying Biology, Health, and Society with double minors in Education and Applied Statistics. He is passionate about expanding access to STEM education through his project, "Bubble! Learn Science" (or simply just "Bubble"), which is a simple, gamified, and interactive website to guide under-resourced students through the process of reading research papers and improve their scientific literacy skills. Outside of Bubble, Rafee researches fusion oncogenes in precision cancer therapy and also facilitates seminars to train high school students to be future health researchers. In the future, he intends to pursue an MD/MPP program to work as a physician and also guide science education policy.
Pink Inference
Michael is a computer science major in the college of engineering with a background in computational neuroscience. He's done research in the past on deep brain stimulation and now focuses on wetware computers (building computers out of neurons). He has co-founded the student org/non-profit Myelin, which organizes research projects and facilitates the Ann Arbor neurotech community. His main efforts center on the start-up: Pink Inference, which is building cost-effective lab equipment to support wetware research.
Advisors
Assistant Professor, Biomedical Engineering
The Li research group in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor focuses on the development of molecular and live cell-based therapeutics, with a major emphasis on the use of bioconjugation chemistry, synthetic biology, and microbiology to interrogate and manipulate interactions between therapeutics, the microbiome, and host.
